The Woolman Semester is an alternative semester program for high school juniors, seniors and gap year students focused on peace, justice and sustainability, located in Nevada City. As the final project for English: Peace Studiesclass, students collaborate on short documentary films on a wide range of topics. This semester the projects focus on women’s rights, rape and consent, sexual health education and reproductive rights, refugees in the United Sates, LGBTQ organizations and their work on hate crimes, and music education in public schools. Documentaries feature interviews with local and national experts as well as Nevada City/Grass Valley community members and are filmed, written, produced and directed by students.

The culmination of the semester. A beautiful, heartfelt graduation with an opportunity for each student to recount some meaningful experiences from this semester with family and friends. Graduation is not a good-bye to our students but a celebration of what we have learned from each other during these past 4 months. Don't miss this!
We are no longer taking registration for Family Work Camp.
You are invited to join us for Family Work Camp 2010 (June 13-20) at our beautiful site in the Sierra foothills. Each summer we come together as a community to play music, clear brush, learn to knit, pick blackberries, put on new roofs, swim in the Yuba River, play in the garden, create delicious meals, paint buildings, play soccer, and look at the spectacular night sky. This is a time that many cherish – working alongside others who believe in the possibility of a peaceful, creative world. The work is important – and the appreciation profound! Sierra Friends Center depends on this help every year. Everyone can contribute meaningfully to support the learning community.
Schedule: Camp will begin on the afternoon of June 13th, in time to settle in before dinner at 6 p.m. The evening gives us time to get acquainted, socialize and plan the week’s work. Reminder: Sierra Friends Center is a drug, alcohol and tobacco free site.
Each day begins with breakfast at about 7:30 am, followed by Meeting for Worship, and then work from 9am to noon. After lunch we meet to plan afternoon activities including time for rest, exploration on and off campus, talk, play and naps--or you can keep on working if you’d like. Meals are plentiful and delicious. The staff of Sierra Friends Center often joins us for fellowship. After dinner there is usually a game of soccer, Jugs, or Capture the Flag, with players of all ages and abilities. Skit nights, games, music, folk dancing, and other festivities are woven into the camp in the evenings.

Cost: Our fees cover meals and lodging FOR A WEEK!

Woolman Semester students will be on the road for a week looking at different sites of food production in Northern California as part of their Environmental Science class. As background for this trip they read Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma along with other companion articles.
Come down to the Petaluma Progressive Festival and stop by the Woolman Semester booth. We'll have admissions officers on hand to answer questions, Woolman gear for purchase, and lots of excitement for the day's events. This year Alice Walker will be speaking to the crowd and there will also be food, music, and amazing social justice organizations. Let us know if you'll be in town--we'd love to see you there!
Woolman staff and interns will share perspectives on college, graduate school, gap year, and other post-high school opportunities. Students will browse Woolman's growing library of college information and ask questions of the staff and interns. There will also be pies and treats--a college night tradition!
A week of volunteering for organizations doing great work in California. One group of students will work at Soil Born, an urban farm Sacramento (http://www.soilborn.org/) and the other will work with Self-Help Enterprises building homes in Visalia. (http://www.selfhelpenterprises.org/default.asp)

Students drive to the Mexican border town of Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico which is opposite Douglas, AZ. They study immigration and border issues, volunteer at a Migrant Resource Center, interview border patrol agents, tour a machilladora, and visit a fair trade coffee co-op. This service-learning trip is coordinated with the Global Issues curriculum.
Led by our Global Issues Teacher, Emily Zionts, Woolman student and interns travel to the US-Mexico border town of Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico to study globalization and border issues. As part of the trip students will make the walk to the border fence, visit a Mexican factory, volunteer at a Migrant Resource Center, interview a border patrol officer, and visit a fair trade coffee cooperative. The Mexico Trip coordinates with our Global Issues curriculum, which includes units on Mexico, NAFTA, WTO, and US immigration policy.
Woolman students, staff, and interns will be calling alumni, friends of Woolman, current and past parents, and long time supporters of the school to help raise money for our scholarship fund. You can also donate online by clicking this link.

Hear the Fall 2010 students share their Youth as Peacebuilders research and conflict analysis. This event will be held on campus in the Meetinghouse.
