Sierra Friends Center is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about a 20-minute drive from the historic mining towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City, California.
Driving Directions
From San Francisco
Driving time from the Bay Area is approximately 3 hours. Please note: Traffic often builds up in the Bay Area, Sacramento and Auburn during rush hour, so you may want to time your trip to avoid late afternoons, particularly on Fridays, when the rush can begin around 3 p.m.! From San Francisco Bay Area, and Sacramento:
- Take Interstate 80 east to Auburn California.
- Exit at Highway 49N to Grass Valley, and continue for 24 miles.
- In Grass Valley, take exit 182A- marked Highway 174/Colfax.
- At the bottom of the exit, turn left onto S. Auburn St. and go 1/5th of a mile.
- Turn left onto West Main St. and continue for 2.7 miles. (After about 1/2 mile, West Main becomes Rough and Ready Highway.)
- Turn right onto Bitney Springs Rd. and drive for 1.5 miles.
- Turn right onto Newtown Road and continue for 7/10th of a mile.
- Turn left onto Jones Bar Rd. and continue for 7/10th of a mile.
- Turn right onto Woolman Lane and drive 8/10ths of a mile. Please Note: The speed limit on Woolman Lane is 10 m.p.h. There is a large "Sierra Friends Center" sign at the corner of Jones Bar and Woolman Lane. Woolman Lane ends at the Sierra Friends Center campus.
From Reno/Tahoe
- Take Interstate 80 west to the Nevada City exit (Highway 20), follow for 20 miles to Nevada City. Turn right onto Hwy 49 N just before entering Nevada City, and continue for 2.3 miles.
- At The Willo Bar and Restaurant, turn left onto Newtown Rd, and continue for 3 miles. Newtown Rd. is a narrow and winding road that will seem longer than 3 miles.
- Turn right on Jones Bar Rd and drive for 7/10ths of a mile. Shortly before Jones Bar Road there is a white and green house with John Deere on a street sign.
- Turn right onto Woolman Lane and drive for 8/10ths of a mile. There is a large "Sierra Friends Center" sign at the corner of Jones Bar and Woolman Lane. Woolman Lane ends at the Sierra Friends Center campus.
Park in front of the office slightly to your right. Please note: The speed limit on Woolman Lane is 10 m.p.h.
From Colfax
- Head North on Canyon Way toward Siems Ave for 0.1 miles
- Turn Left at CA-174 W
- Turn Right at S Auburn Street
- Take the first Right onto CA-174 W/ Central Street and continue for 1.5 miles
- Turn left to stay on CA-174 W and continue for 11.4 miles
- Continue to Neal Street
- Turn Right at S Auburn Street for 0.2 miles
- Turn left onto West Main St. and continue for 2.7 miles. (After about 1/2 mile, West Main becomes Rough and Ready Highway.
- Turn right onto Bitney Springs Rd. and drive for 1.5 miles.

Bicycling Directions
Please note there are no bicycle lanes on the roads to the Sierra Friends Campus. Please ride with caution! Wear a helmet and bright colored clothing and use bicycle lights and reflectors at dawn and dusk. Please ride on the right hand side of the lane and watch for cars.
From Grass Valley
Bicycling time from Main Street in Grass Valley takes about 38 minutes one way.
- Turn left onto West Main St. and continue for 2.7 miles. (After about 1/2 mile, West Main becomes Rough and Ready Highway.)
- Turn right onto Bitney Springs Rd. and drive for 1.5 miles.
- Turn right onto Newtown Road and continue for 7/10th of a mile.
- Turn left onto Jones Bar Rd. and continue for 7/10th of a mile.

From Nevada City
Bicycling time from Main Street in Nevada City, CA is about 42 minutes one way.
- Head west on Cottage Street toward Winter Street. Turn right at Broad Street.
- Turn left at Bennet Street.
- Turn left at Monroe Street. Monroe turns slightly right and becomes Old Downieville Hwy. Continue for 3/10ths of a mile.
- Turn left at Champion Rd/Champion MIne Rd and continue for 2.4 miles. Turn right to stay on Champion Road.
- Turn left at Newtown Road. Total mileage on Newtown Road is 2.4 miles.
- Turn right at Jones Bar Road and continue for 8/10ths of a mile.
- Turn right on Woolman Lane and ride 8/10ths of a mile. Please Note: The speed limit on Woolman Lane is 10 m.p.h. There is a large "Sierra Friends Center" sign at the corner of Jones Bar and Woolman Lane. Woolman Lane ends at the Sierra Friends Center campus.
Flying
The best airport to use to reach Woolman is via the Sacramento International Airport.
The driving time from the airport is about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
- Exit Airport to I-5 South and continue for 5.8 miles.
- Take exit 522 to merge onto I-80 E toward Reno. Continue for 33.5 miles.
- Exit at Highway 49N to Grass Valley, and continue for 24 miles.
- In Grass Valley, take exit 182A- marked Highway 174/Colfax.
